Erich Fromm
My Encounter With Marx And Freud
Synopsis
At the beginning of the book, Fromm synthesizes the views of Marx and Freud, while towards the end he explains some concepts he himself employs. The translator, in naming the translated book "The Freedom Problem of Our Age," takes into account that the views of Freud and Marx converge in this framework and recognizes Fromm's acceptance that both society and the individual are unconscious. According to Fromm, an individual is governed by their unconscious. Additionally emphasizing that society also operates in this manner, Fromm asserts that this is why humans cannot be free and to attain freedom, they need to break free from these shackles. The most crucial distinction between Freud and Marx discussed in the book is that Freud operates from a psychological foundation while Marx is rooted in sociology. Yet, aside from this, the structures and theories they employ are largely similar.
