Gratitude research has been measuring the wrong person. Adam Grant and Francesca Gino's fundraising call center study revealed that a director's two-sentence thank-you pushed weekly calls from 41 to 63, but not because workers felt more competent. The mechanism was feeling valued, a belonging signal rather than a skill signal. More surprising: in German data-entry experiments, workers who didn't receive recognition cards outperformed those who did by over 10 percent. The unthanked person moves most.
You'll learn:
- Why recognition works as belonging signal, not competence signal
- How thanking three of eight outperforms thanking everyone
- When gratitude backfires by granting permission to slack
